Xiaomi Takes on Matter With a New Retrofit Smart Lock

Xiaomi has quietly launched a new retrofit smart lock aimed at renters, offering home door security and broader smart home compatibility. The Self-Install Smart Lock has appeared on the company’s global product site and is rolling out in select regions, offering a no-drill installation approach, multiple access methods, and Matter smart home integration that includes Apple Home support – a notable development, but possibly a bit too late to the party, unless a tight budget is in play.

The Self-Install Smart Lock is designed as an add-on solution that fits over an existing mechanical door lock structure. Unlike some traditional smart locks that require professional installation or door modification, Xiaomi’s approach lets users install the device without drilling or altering the structural integrity of the door. This isn’t a new concept by any means, as companies like August, Yale, and Nuki have offered this type of retreat solution for years, but it’s a first for Xiaomi, especially when it comes to Matter integration.

The retrofit design supports multiple popular lock cylinder types – including Euro profile, UK mortise, and ASSA 2000 – meaning a broader range of doors can be upgraded without hardware changes.

This positions the new Xiaomi lock as a compelling alternative for renters or homeowners seeking smart functionality with minimal fuss or cost. Installation adjusts to existing knobs and cylinders, with clear guidance on sizing and door requirements.

Xiaomi has included a few unlocking options to suit different preferences and security needs. These include:

  • Fingerprint recognition via a semiconductor sensor on the separate keypad (with a 99.3 % identification rate)
  • Permanent and temporary passwords, including one-time and periodic codes.
  • Bluetooth (for Apple Home) and Wi-Fi unlock through the Xiaomi Home app.
  • Physical key override for emergencies.
  • Remote control and logs, enabling real-time lock status, security alerts, and family member arrival notifications.

Voice control is supported through major assistants – including Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri via Apple Home – though some platforms require additional authentication steps for security.

The lock comes in two parts – the inner assembly that sits over your existing thumb turn or eurocylinder lock, and the keypad, which adheres to the outside of the door, which is the reason it offers an IP65 weather proof rating. The keypad runs on two AA batteries.

A significant aspect of Xiaomi’s Self-Install Smart Lock is native support for the Matter smart home standard, although unlike many manufacturers, it at first seems they’ve steered clear of Matter over Thread and have opted for Matter over WiFi, but the specs specifically do mention Thread, so it may be that the Thread Radio will be activated for platforms that support Thread Border Routers. It also supports WiFi 6. Matter compatibility enables native interaction with Apple Home, and the other platforms, so this can be added to multiple ecosystems for those who might use Android for example.

This aligns Xiaomi with the broader industry shift toward unified smart home interoperability. For Apple Home users in particular, Matter support means the new lock should appear in the Apple Home app alongside other devices – and, where supported, respond to Siri voice commands and automations. This has been a long time coming of course, especially considering Xiaomi went cold on HomeKit compatible devices a long time ago.

Xiaomi emphasises security for both software and hardware. The lock is built around the company’s MJA1 chipset and carries EN18031 European cybersecurity certification, offering end-to-end protection from tampering and unauthorised access.

Additional safety and convenience features include:

  • Auto-lock functionality (dependent on a compatible door sensor).
  • Anti-tamper warnings with push notifications.
  • Duress and failed-attempt alerts.
  • Door left open indication (when paired with a sensor).
  • Remote status monitoring over Wi-Fi.

The lock and keypad are powered by a 2450mAh lithium battery claimed to deliver around six months of typical use.

The lock has begun appearing in markets including Japan and the United Arab Emirates, priced competitively with retro-fit smart lock solutions – for example around ¥12,980 in Japan (about US$82) and AED 359 in the UAE – and is expected in other regions, including Europe, later in 2026, although the lock has appeared on some independent webstores in Europe, with prices ranging from €121 to 153.

Its easy installation, broad unlocking options, and Matter compatibility make the Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock a possible contender in the value-oriented smart lock segment, especially compared with existing retrofit products. Its appeal to those hungry for things like Apple HomeKey or Ultra Wideband is unlikely, however.
